Course summary

Course outline This is a 2 year course which leads to a full A level. During the course you will develop skills of recording, composing, listening, and music production. All units are to be externally assessed. The 4 units are: recording (coursework); composition (coursework); listening and analysing (examined); and analysing and producing (examined). A 1-year AS level version of this course is available and can be discussed with staff. Lesson structure and expectations Lessons will be divided between recording, mixing, editing, composing, developing synthesized sounds, listening and analysing. Students will be expected to develop their skills outside of lessons and the computers will be made available during their study periods as often as possible. We have a fully equipped studio with live room and wide range of up to date microphones which enable students to develop their practical skills in recording. We have a computer suite with Cubase Artist and VST plugins which students use in most lessons. We also offer many extra-curricular opportunities for students to develop live sound and technical support skills. These include audio technician roles and support for Battle of the Bands; lighting technician roles and design for shows and performances and work experience with Ampthill Proms and Amprocks. Course requirements A grade 5 in GCSE music or a merit in level 2 BTEC music. Next steps Further study of music technology at degree level or through an apprenticeship could lead to work as a sound engineer, work in radio, television, theatre and film, in a record company and as a DJ. Future careers include performing to teaching, librarianship, music therapy, publishing, journalism, retail and marketing, orchestral management, arts administration, composing and arranging, jobs in the recording and broadcasting industries, etc. Also, music can be used for any job wanting an arts degree qualification and musicians have become lawyers (often specialising in contracts, copyright, etc.) or accountants.
