Course outline Geography examines the issues that are facing people in all parts of the world today. The course provides a balance across physical and human geography. This is a two year linear course, with the A level exams taken at the end of Year 13. Unit 1: Physical Geography: Water and carbon cycles, Glacial systems and Landscapes Hazards Unit 2: Human Geography: Global systems and governance, Changing places, Contemporary Urban Environments Unit 3: Geographical Investigation: Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. Students must define and develop a question or issue relating to a part of the specification content. Lesson structure and expectations Students will have two teachers, each responsible for a different exam paper. Lessons will include a variety of approaches to learning, including individual work, lecture, group work, research and investigation and practising geographical skills. The exam board states that all students must complete a minimum of 4 days of compulsory fieldwork and we will complete these as single days of fieldwork. We hope to be able to return to residential fieldwork and to offer an optional residential trip to either a UK based glacial landscape and/ or Iceland depending on restrictions at the time and there being sufficient demand. Course requirements A grade 5 in Geography and a grade 4 in English language and mathematics. Next steps The nature of the subject dictates that geography students are literate, numerate, ICT competent and are skilled in data analysis and decision making, therefore making them very attractive in the job market and strong candidates for a huge variety of university courses.
