Course summary

Course outline A level French is a challenging but motivating course of study which builds on the positive attitudes to language learning at GCSE. Throughout the two year course students will develop their confidence and competence in practical communication whilst acquiring an advanced knowledge and understanding of the culture of France and other francophone countries. In year 12 students will study the culture of France through the interesting topic areas of the changing family structure, education and the world of work. The francophone world is extremely diverse and students will study the influences of music, media and festivals within other francophone countries. They will also study the film “Les Choristes” and continue to improve their French grammar. In year 13 students will develop their cultural knowledge of topics such as immigration in France, multiculturalism and the Front National. A historical understanding of the French Occupation, the Vichy Regime and the Resistance will also be developed. Students will study the novel “L’Étranger” by Albert Camus, as well as undertake an independent research project of their own choice. Lesson structure and expectations Lessons will include a range of activities designed to improve students’ skills in summary writing, reading, listening, speaking, grammar development and acquisition of vocabulary. Essay planning and writing on literary texts, as well as research skills will be key features of teaching and learning in year 13. Students will need to purchase their own personal CD player and copies of the prescribed novel, film and grammar guides. Independent work will be a crucial commitment for every A level French student. Course requirements A grade 5 in French, and a grade 4 English language and literature. Next steps French offers opportunities of travel and work experience in French speaking countries. Highly respected by universities and employers, it will enhance students’ personal and professional prospects.
