Is this course for me? The CORE Maths course supports students progression by: • preparing them for the mathematics requirements of a number of higher education courses. • developing their understanding and ability to apply mathematics. • equipping them to apply for employment or higher apprenticeships in a wide range of industry sectors, professional training or university. How does the course different from AS/ A Level Mathematics? Core Mathematics reflects the content of the new GCSE in Mathematics and is measured as a Level 3 qualification, accredited by Ofqual, and equivalent in size to an AS qualification. However, it is distinct from AS Mathematics as learners consolidate mathematical techniques that can be directly applied to real-life contexts. What will I learn? The course comprises of two components; • Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning, where students develop skills in, among other areas, financial problem solving and dealing with probability and risk. • Critical Maths, where students gain a greater insight into how statistics are produced and used in the media and how they affect our judgement of items reported in the news. This module encourages students to not take reported numbers at face value but rather to challenge what they read and form their own opinion. What could this course lead to? This qualification provides the mathematical skills to support students progressing to higher education to study subjects that ‘use’ mathematics including, for example, biology, business, geography, health and social care, nursing and psychology. Students planning to study more mathematically-based subjects, including mathematics, statistics and physics will find A Level mathematics is likely to be a requirement.
