Course summary

What is Sociology and why study it? • Sociology is the study of society. In sociology we look at big questions that surround how society functions and how members live in society. • Sociology teaches people how to think critically about social issues and problems that confront our society. • Sociology provides valuable insights on societal functioning, social justice and how humans interact with each other. • Sociology gives you the tools you need to understand the key events of our time and how they are linked to the main forces and institutions that shape the modern world. • Sociology enables us to make sense of the rapidly changing world that we live in. • The skills developed during a Sociology degree are applicable to many areas of work. Questions to consider: • Do you enjoy finding out about people and society – past, present, and future? • Do you enjoy discussing and exploring key contemporary issues such as why is society becoming secular? What could be the possible explanations for increased gang violence in London? Is social media making childhood toxic? Why are boys now underachievers in education? • Do you want to study an A level subject that is interesting and relevant to your life? Sociology is an analytical subject that enables you to develop critical skills. It teaches you to question and evaluate – key skills that employers look for. Sociology provides a completely different way of thinking about the world and you will begin to question things you have always taken for granted. Sociology is a well-regarded academic subject and can help open the door for you at the top universities in the UK. Topics covered in the course are: • Education with theory and methods – we explore inequalities in the education system- for example we question, who is most likely to perform well? Why? What role does institutionalise racism play? • Topics in Sociology and research methods - 2 hours (Research Methods section compulsory and then students answer all questions on Families and Households and Beliefs in society. We explore questions like- Are couples equal? Why do women do more domestic labour? Why are men paid more? How does religion play a part in reinforcing patriarchy? What role does religion play in economic development? • Crime and Deviance with Theory- In this topic we explore who is most likely to commit a crime? Why? What behaviours are deemed deviant? Are you born a criminal? A level Sociology goes well with most subject combinations such as History, Politics, Economics, Geography, and Psychology. The skills learnt in Sociology can support you in other subject areas. Where next? The independent study skills learnt in Sociology are excellent preparation for university. Sociologists go on to work in the media, law, government, marketing/advertising, business and other institutions of criminal justice, public relations, market research, medicine and social work, foreign aid and development and teaching. Many are inspired to stay in an academic environment researching aspects of sociology for the remainder of their career. What are the entrance requirements? No subject specific entrance requirements.
