In Year 12 we complete Edexcel BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Sport and if students choose to continue into Year 13 they will extend the qualification to the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport. This is a modular course, made up of coursework and two external assessments (an exam and a set task). In year 12 students will complete one mandatory unit, Anatomy and Physiology (assessed through an external exam) and one optional unit (assessed through coursework). In year 13, the students will complete two mandatory units, Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (assessed through an externally set task) and Professional Development in the Sports Industry(assessed through coursework). Subject content Students will cover a range of topics including anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming for health, sport and well-being and professional development in the sports industry. They can also choose the subject content for their optional unit, from a range of topics such as; sports leadership, sports coaching, sports psychology, sports event organisation.

Work will be assessed throughout the course. A grade for each unit (Pass, Merit, Distinction) will be given and an overall grade of Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* for the whole course. A range of different types of work will be assessed. As well as written work students may be assessed through visual and oral presentations, role play, practical work and project work. The external exam will be written and students will undertake the exam at the same time. For the externally set task, students will have a period of preparation using set information before completing a vocational task. Students are permitted one resit for each external assessment.
