While continuing your study of the French language and developing your language skills on this course, you will gain insight into the history, culture and social issues facing francophone countries today. You will have weekly conversation lessons with our French Language Assistant to improve your fluency, exploring current affairs in the francophone world. The first year of the course concentrates on topics which link to, and stretch beyond, subjects covered at GCSE. Focused on the francophone world, topics include: changing trends in family life; how digital technology is changing and influencing society; the role of charities and the charitable sector; cultural heritage and the debate around its protection; the importance of music and the history of French cinema. Study of the film 'La Haine' and the novel 'No et moi' also begins at the end of Year 12 and continue into Year 13 as you develop the analytical and linguistic skills needed to craft an essay in French. Alongside your film and literature studies, you will discuss and debate more controversial social and political issues, such as diversity and tolerance; marginalised groups; crime and prisons; how young people engage with politics; strikes, unions and protests, and how immigration influences politics. Throughout the course, you will build up a bank of relevant cultural knowledge and linguistic breadth to confidently tackle exam questions. Required: GCSE French Grade 7+. We welcome students with an enthusiasm for speaking, reading and listening to French and an interest in the French-speaking world.
