Course summary

This course is for you if you are curious about the universe around you and seek to explain the phenomena we encounter in our daily lives through mathematical and philosophical models. We explore the physical laws that govern the behaviour of the universe from the very small quantum world to the cosmological scale of stars and galaxies. Topics covered include Classical Mechanics; Waves; Electricity; Particle Physics; Materials; Radioactivity; Fields; Astrophysics. We have a strong emphasis on practical skills as well as academic knowledge. Experimental work is an essential part of the course and excellent preparation for university. Lessons are based around exploring the world and how Physics seeks to model and explain what we observe. Physics as an A Level is highly rated by all universities, whatever course you choose. It demonstrates that you have good critical thinking and problem-solving skills and can apply your mathematical skills to real-world situations. Highlights Lots of practical experimentation to work out how things work. Plenty of challenging mathematics. Opportunities to answer the ‘big questions’.

Entry requirements

Required: GCSE Double Science or Physics, and Maths: Grade 7 (Grade 8 preferred). Studying A Level Maths is not required, but does help. If you are aiming to read Physics and Engineering at Russell Group universities, A Level Further Mathematics is recommended.

How you'll be assessed

Particles and radiation, Waves, Mechanics and materials, Electricity, Periodic motion - 34% Thermal physics, Fields and their consequences, Nuclear physics - 34% Astrophysics, Practical skills and data analysis - 32%
