
Have you ever wondered how our brain learns new physical skills, why some of us are very quick or why our national sport is football? This course is for you if you are interested in sport and the various ways in which it affects individuals and society as a whole. This is an academic subject, which mixes theory with practice. The course aims to equip you with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. You will develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. Highlights Specialise in sports that are unique to you, from equestrian to climbing, from handball to hockey. Broad and challenging, this course relates athlete training to sports science. You will need to be an able physical performer, as the course requires a committed study in one sport/activity.
The theory is taught and examined in three papers: 1. Physiological factors affecting performance: Applied anatomy and physiology; Exercise physiology; Biomechanics. 2. Psychological factors affecting performance: Skill acquisition; Sports psychology. 3. Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport: Sport and society; Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport. Three written examinations - 70% One practical sport/activity - 15% One verbal evaluation and analysis of performance - 15%
