Course summary

AQA A-level Chemistry is an advanced course that deepens your understanding of fundamental and applied chemistry. Practical skills are emphasised through required experiments, preparing students for scientific challenges. The curriculum is divided clearly into Physical chemistry, Organic chemistry and Inorganic chemistry, students will focus on foundational topics like structure and bonding, energetics, and introductory organic chemistry. Year 2 will have students looking to dive deeper and look at thermodynamics, transition metals and analytical techniques.

Entry requirements

To study Chemistry you would need to achieve at least a grade 6 in GCSE Chemistry or 7-7 in Combined Science.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Focuses on physical and inorganic chemistry modules, lasts 2 hours and is worth 35% of the A-level. Paper 2: Covers physical and organic chemistry modules, lasts 2 hours and accounts for 35% of the A-level. Paper 3: Tests practical techniques, data analysis, and a mix of questions from all topics across the specification. It also lasts 2 hours and contributes the remaining 30% to your final grade.
