OCR’s A Level in Classical Civilisation aims to provide learners with a broad, coherent and rewarding study of the literature and culture of the classical world. It offers the opportunity to study elements of the literature, visual/material culture and thought of the classical world, and acquire an understanding of their social, historical and cultural contexts. A study of Classical Civilisation complements many other popular A levels, including Art, Drama and Theatre Studies, English Literature, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, and Philosophy, as well as a study of the classical languages. The topics cover aspects of classical civilisation which have been significant in the development of the modern world. All include a study of primary classical sources, whether texts in translation or physical evidence, and all encourage candidates to gain an understanding of Greek and/or Roman society and its values. The course encourages candidates to develop the critical and evaluative skills which will enable them to go on to Higher Education to study a wide range of courses. The knowledge gained in following the course will, or course, enable candidates to go on to Higher Education to study Classics or Ancient History. The course does not require any previous study of a classical subject or knowledge of the Classical Greek or Latin language. However, the choices available enable candidates who have studied a classical subject to GCSE to broaden and deepen their knowledge and understanding of classical culture. Candidates are required to study three components, with a chance to study both Greece and Rome, and this makes it possible to study each of the topics chosen in great depth.
The basic requirement is 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, with ‘passes’ i.e. at least Grade 4 in Maths and English and, preferably, grade 6 or above in the chosen subjects.
