
You will learn about methods of language analysis such as lexis, grammar and pragmatics. You will then apply these frameworks to the analysis of three key elements of language study: variation and representation; language diversity and change, and language in action. For variation and representation you will explore how language is shaped according to audience, purpose, genre and mode. For language diversity and change you will look at how people in different occupations use language, how men and women use language differently, and how the English language has changed over time. For langauage in action in Year 13 you will independently work on language investigation of your choosing and create a piece of original writing.
English Language or English Literature GCSE at 6 grade or above.
You will be assessed by two exams in Year 12 and then two exams and two pieces of coursework in Year 13. Previous examples of coursework titles include ‘The language of power in Top Gear’ and ‘An analysis of the changing language of chocolate advertisements through the 20th Century.’
