Course summary

Further Mathematics is a qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A Level Mathematics. It is designed to be learnt alongside A Level Mathematics over a two-year course. Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience. For someone who enjoys mathematics, the course provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. It also enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in applying to university and, later, in the employment market. Topics studied in the course include: Pure mathematics: Proof, Complex numbers, Further Series, Advanced Roots of Polynomials, Volumes of Revolution, Matrices, Linear Transformations, Further vectors, Further algebra, Further calculus, Methods in calculus, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic Functions, Further Differential equations and modelling. Mechanics: Work, energy and power, Impulse and momentum, Elastic Strings and Springs, Elastic collisions in 1-D & 2-D. Decision: Algorithms, Graphs and Networks, Graphical Algorithms, Route Inspection, The travelling salesman problem, linear programming, the simplex algorithm, critical path analysis.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a grade 7 in GCSE Maths is required to study A Level Further Maths. This subject can only be taken as a 4th A Level choice.

How you'll be assessed

4 x 90-minute exams, each worth 25% of total A Level Paper 1 and 2: Pure Core 1 and 2 Paper 3 and 4: Further Mechanics & Decision Maths
