Realise it or not, deep down we are all chemists. Every time we light a match, boil an egg or simply breathe in and out, we perform a chemical reaction. In the A level, you will build on the chemistry you have studied in GCSE, and in some cases you will understand for the first time why these reactions happen. You will study the building blocks of life itself and build some of these substances for yourself. Throughout the course, not only will you develop your practical ability but also your understanding of why and how we analyse the results of experiments. You will learn a variety of practical skills underpinned by a broad theoretical knowledge of matter’s composition, structure and properties, reactions and interaction with energy. Chemistry is fundamentally an experimental subject so there are numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality. Interesting fact about studying this at S6C Chemistry at S6C is taught in modern, purpose built labs. The course involves lots of practical work which prepares you for the study of science at university. The practical work is carefully planned to meet the practical endorsement certificate which is an essential part of the course.
Grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry
The A level course is examined through three exams at the end of the second year of study, two of which are based on the course content and the third is to examine your knowledge of practical work, skills and techniques. The exams will contain questions that test your mathematical skills which are worth 20% of the overall grade.
