Course Description The Art & Design course in Fine Art is designed to strengthen and build on the skills, techniques and processes acquired at GCSE Art & Design such as: recording ideas and observations, developing work informed by artists, designers and craftspeople, experimenting with media and materials, and reviewing and refining work. Through taught lessons, workshops and independent study, you will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of art media, techniques and processes and be made aware of traditional and new technologies. These will include painting and drawing, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking, animation, video, and photography. You should be aware of the importance of research and you are encouraged to explore methods for developing themes and ideas. Through your develop over the two years you will: • be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the appreciation of different approaches to recording images, such as observation, analysis and expression • be able to recognise different ways of working, such as using underpainting, glazing, wash and impasto, modelling, assembling, mono printing, lino printing, and screen printing • develop an understanding of space, composition, rhythm, scale and structure • be able to recognise and critically analyse and interpret the visual elements. Students progress onto a wide range of art and design degree courses. Career opportunities include commercial art, graphic design, textiles, fashion, ceramics, interior, theatre design, architecture, film animation and video, arts administration, photography, conservation and restoration, teaching and art therapy. Interesting fact about studying this subject at S6C: You will be offered a range of opportunities in Fine Art such as working to live briefs (last year students designed and made the backdrop to a 60s inspired music event); taking part in local competitions; masterclasses and guest speakers from the creative industry.
Consideration will be given to those who have not studied an Art or Design course at school, in this case a portfolio of work must be provided at your interview.
The first year is an opportunity to build a portfolio of work that can be used in interviews at university, art foundations, apprenticeships and work experience placements. The second year comprises of two components: the personal investigation (60%) and the externally set assignment (40%). You will receive feedback every three weeks as part of the assessment cycle as well as 1:1s with your subject teacher. Components 1 and 2 are assessed internally and then subject to external moderation to national standards.
