Business A level explores the challenges and issues of starting up and running a successful business, the objectives businesses have and the reasons why some of them fail. The common business functions of marketing, finance, operations and human resources (people management) are all studied in the context of both small business start-ups and large plcs such as Tesco and BP. The second year of the course delves deeper into the ethical stances and social responsibilities of businesses, cultural differences between organisations and strategies used by firms to grow and achieve their objectives. The second part of Year 13 focuses upon external factors which influence organisational strategies and decisions, and the context of trading internationally. The course gives a solid grounding in understanding how businesses operate and the constraints and contexts within which they do so, and is complementary to almost any subject combination. An A level in Business gives students valuable knowledge of the business world in which they will inevitably work, whatever their chosen career.
