The Cambridge Technical in Applied Science is a predominantly practical subject which will develop your practical skills ready for a career in science. The course covers common practical techniques used in professional laboratories including microbiology practicals such as cloning cauliflower and bacteria staining, chemistry practicals including inorganic ion testing and chromatography, and gel electrophoresis. You will be introduced to a huge variety of equipment and techniques and discover how these are used by real scientists. Excellent attendance and a positive work ethic are essential for this course. Working towards a Level 3 applied general science qualification will make you a strong independent learner with excellent practical skills ready for a place at university or full time employment. Applied Science can be studied alongside other A level sciences as an additional L3 science qualification. This course forms an excellent basis for employment in the science industry on the technical side. It is also good preparation for careers in public services such as the police force, fire service or NHS. It can lead to employment in areas related to food and human or environmental studies. If taken alongside other science A Levels, this course provides a route to a wide range of science-related university courses.
The course is made up of five modules, two of which are assessed by external exam and the remaining three are internally assessed.
