Course summary

The aim is to develop your knowledge of French, your language skills and your appreciation of cultural aspects of France and French-speaking countries. More than 200 million people speak French on the five Continents. Learning another language opens your mind to new ideas and new ways of looking at the world. An ability to speak French and English is a huge advantage in the international job market, not only in France but also in countries such as Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, and North and sub-Saharan Africa. France is the world’s fifth biggest economy and number-three destination for foreign investment. Through this course, you will become more comfortable using the grammatical system and structures of the language. You will also learn to manipulate the target language accurately to organise facts and ideas, present explanations, opinions and information in both speech and writing. You will develop the ability to be creative and imaginative when communicating in speech and writing and you will learn to use appropriate registers in both of these forms of communication. You will develop the skills to use the target language spontaneously, to analyse, hypothesise, evaluate, argue a case, justify, persuade, develop arguments and present viewpoints, in speech and in writing. You will also explore aspects of the society, culture and communities where the language is used. Languages provide you with excellent communication and listening skills as well as a competency in giving presentations and talking to different audiences. Students of languages can also learn a number of useful transferrable skills including time management, research, critical thinking and project management, all very useful in any employment. In addition to the usual professions (teaching, translations, tourism, business) many linguists work in the media or in PR and Marketing. It is an excellent idea to combine a language at university with another subject such as Law, Business, Medicine, Maths, Accountancy, Physics, Chemistry or even Design and Engineering to give yourself the dual skills which employers nowadays seek.
