
BTEC Forensic and Criminal Investigation have a flexible and unit-based structure. The course is equivalent to 1.5 A-levels, and the Diploma is made up of 2 exam units (40%) and 4 coursework based units (60%). Each unit provides an opportunity to develop not only scientific knowledge, but also investigative skills, analysis, and report writing. There is a focus on the holistic development of the practical, interpersonal, and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education. This recently developed course has been developed alongside employers, higher education providers, colleges, and schools to ensure that students are work-ready and have developed skills such as teamwork, have experience of research, extended writing, and meeting deadlines.
Unit 1 – 3 x 40-minute exams in biology, chemistry, and physics (17% of overall grade) Unit 2 – 4 x coursework assignments based on practical investigations (17% of overall grade) Unit 4 – 3 x coursework assignments based on a crime scene investigation (17% of overall grade) Year 13 Unit 3 – 90 minute exam about scientific investigation skills (25% of overall grade) Unit 8 – 3 x coursework assignments based on research of body systems (12% of overall grade) Unit 10 – 3 x coursework assignments based on research of the causes, development, and investigation of fires (12% of overall grade)
