Course summary

This course will expose you to inspiring and engaging themes, ranging from social dilemmas on immigration and international dictatorships to modern lifestyles, as well as including popular literary texts and films. During this course you will develop an advanced level knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language, the culture of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries, as well as practical and valuable language and transferable study skills. This course will help you to prepare for higher education and to enhance your employability profile. What you will do: Study four themes: Theme 1: The development of Spanish society - set in the context of Spain only. This theme covers social issues and trends. Theme 2: Political and artistic culture in the Spanish speaking world - set in the context of Spanish-speaking countries and communities. This theme covers artistic culture (through music and festivals and traditions) and political and artistic culture (through media). Theme 3: Immigration and the multicultural Spanish society - set in the context of Spain only. This theme covers social issues and trends. Theme 4: The dictatorship of Franco and the transition to democracy - set in the context of Spain only. This theme covers political culture Study two texts (a film and a short novel): engaging with them critically and analysing their historical context · Develop your knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language in its spoken and written form. · Improve your ability to manipulate the Spanish language and express yourself both verbally and in writing. · Gain an appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world, its current issues and traditions.
