
Core Maths is about students doing meaningful mathematical problems to increase their confidence in using mathematics to be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education and employment. It is an AS Level designed to be taught over 1 year The course is an alternative to A Level Maths for those student who want some Maths to support their other A Level subjects. Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills. What students study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis, whether in work, study or life. Most Core Maths courses will include a financial mathematics element and can help with other A level subjects, in particular with science, geography, business studies, economics and psychology. Mathematical skills are becoming increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education - studying Core Maths will help students to keep up these essential skills. Students will use this qualification to support their applications to University, Apprenticeships or employment to demonstrate that they have a sound and current mathematical knowledge.
Students must have GCSE Maths Grade 4 or above
2 written papers both assessing applications of statistics ● Probability ● Linear programming ● Sequences and growth. Paper 1 focuses on comprehension and paper 2 on application of the maths learned to the contexts given.
