Course summary

Core Maths is designed to develop students’ mathematical skills and thinking and supports courses such as A-level Psychology, Sciences and Geography as well as technical and vocational qualifications such as Business, Economics and Computing. The subject content is designed to support these other subjects as well as the mathematics needed for a variety of university courses. Students will use spreadsheets, calculators as well as written statistical and graphical techniques to model and analyse different situations. Course Aims This Level 3 Certificate Mathematical Studies qualification will consolidate students’ mathematical understanding,build their confidence and competence in applying mathematical techniques to solve a range of problems and introduce them to new techniques and concepts that will prepare them for further study and future employment within a broad range of academic, professional and technical fields. A course of study leading to this qualification should enable students to: • Study a mathematics curriculum that is integrated with other areas of their study, work or interest leading to the application of mathematics in these areas • Develop mathematical modelling, evaluating and reasoning skills • Solve problems some of which will not be well defined and may not have a unique solution • Solve substantial and real life problems encountered by adults • Use ICT as an exploratory tool for developing mathematical understanding and when solving problems • Develop skills in the communication, selection, use and interpretation of their mathematics • Enjoy mathematics and develop confidence in using mathematics Essential attributes needed to complete this course: • Have an interest in using mathematics to investigate real world problems, prove hypotheses and analyse data trends. • Work logically to solve multi-step problems. • Be resilient and willing to try different strategies to solve problems. • Be able to work accurately with numbers, statistics and graphs. • Have a working knowledge of ICT such as spreadsheets to aid calculations.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in GCSE Maths

How you'll be assessed

2 equally weighted exams of 1½ hours at the end of the 2 year course. Calculators are allowed in all exams. Preliminary materials are released by the exam board and used in lesson to prepare students for the exam.
