This course is very different to GCSE English Language. The aim of this subject is to introduce students to methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. Students will be examined on their understanding of textual variations and the way modes, purposes, audiences and a wide range of other personal, social and geographical contextual factors impact upon language production and reception. Students will be required to use linguistic methods to analyse and investigate a variety of texts taken from everyday sources, such as online forums and newspaper articles, to explore how meaning and representations are created. Students will also develop understanding of the key concepts and theories surrounding language study, considering key topics such as sociolects, dialects, language change, and children’s language development. The non-examination element requires students to conduct a language investigation into an area of interest, collecting, analysing and evaluating their own data. They will also have the opportunity to produce a piece of original writing to suit a particular purpose, audience and genre, with an accompanying commentary which explains their language choices. This allows students the opportunity to explore texts and features of language which interest them. Both the investigation and original writing will have a distinctive approach to analysis that is shaped by the particular needs of the research pathway or theme chosen. If you are interested in studying English at A Level with the focus on analysing all kinds of texts and researching the writer’s craft, then English Language A Level is for you.
