Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science is for post-16 learners who want to continue to study science but would welcome a more practically based and applied approach to the learning. They are suitable for those who aim to progress to University and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to give a coherent introduction to study of science and the applied science sector. Skills students will acquire through the course include: • A good understanding of core science concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and to be able to apply them to the work place. • How to plan investigations, collecting, analysing, and presenting data and communicating results. • Cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology. • Intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self presentation • Interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development. • Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions. The subject encourages students to enhance their knowledge of: Animal and plant cells, tissues, sampling techniques, atomic structure and bonding, chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses, waves and their application in communications, electricity Laboratory equipment and its calibration, preparation and standardisation of solutions using titration, colorimetry and chromatographic techniques. Understand the impact of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and their associated corrective treatments. Understand the impact of disorders on the physiology of the lymphatic system and the associated corrective treatments. Health matters and treatments related to the digestive system.
