Course summary

Advanced Level History increases your powers of argument, analysis and judgement, whilst also developing your ability to state and support a point of view coherently and convincingly. History is now widely acknowledged as providing students with transferable skills, not only useful for an understanding of the world today, but also essential for many areas in the job market. The following topics will be studied over the full A Level course: 1. The Quest for Political Stability: Germany 1871-1991. This unit focuses on empire to democracy, 1871-1929, the impact of Nazism, war and division, 1929-1991 and division to unity: the Federal Republic of Germany, 1949- 1991. 2. Wars and Welfare: Britain in Transition, 1906–1957. This unit focuses on the Liberal crisis, the impact of war, the search for stability and the emergence of the affluent society, 1929-1957. 3. Historical Investigation We employ a wide style of teaching approaches, ranging from note-taking to discussion, to the delivery of seminars and participation in group work. The focus is very much on exploring historical debates, interpretations controversies and producing sustained lines of argument and reasoned conclusions. Trips, visits and exhibitions enhance student learning and further stimulate interest. A trip to Berlin in the summer term of year 12 helps to enhance students understanding of the period.
