Course summary

This course is an intermediate qualification for post-16 learners who want to specialise in a specific occupation, occupational area or technical role. It prepares learners for work or an Apprenticeship by giving them the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge, technical and practical skills, and to apply these skills in work-related environments. The qualifications also provide progression to Level 3 Tech Level qualifications. The content of the qualification consists of five mandatory units and relates directly to the skills, knowledge and behaviours expected by employers in the engineering sector. The areas covered include: • Engineering principles. This is an external examination held in May of Year 12 (45 Credits) • Processes and materials. This is an external examination held in May of Year 13 (45 Credits) • Business improvement techniques (30 Credits) • Workshop skills (60 Credits) • Delivering engineering solutions. (60 Credits) Learners choose two optional units, where the content introduces the more focused knowledge and skills needed to start working in the engineering sector. The areas learners will choose from are: • Machining techniques (60 Credits) • Printed circuit board (PCB) components and soldering (60 Credits) • Computer numerical control (60 Credits) • Electrical components and wiring. (60 Credits) The total credits needed for the qualification is 360 credits.
