A Level in Mathematics is offered to students in VI Form who have achieved Grade 6 or above in their Maths GCSE. Consideration may be given to students who achieved Grade 5 at GCSE if they can demonstrate an enthusiasm and determination to achieve in what is a very demanding and stretching course. AS Level Mathematics contains a core element similar to the previous AS Level but the applied element is now split equally between that of Mechanics & Statistics. Studying A Level Mathematics is essential for students wishing to also opt for the Extended Technical Baccalaureate qualification. The content for the AS Level course is similar to the 1st year of the A Level course however the AS examination and subsequent result does not form part of the final A Level qualification and is therefore considered a ‘stand-alone’ qualification that carries 40% of the UCAS points awarded for an A Level qualification. A Level Mathematics covers all the core material from the previous A Level course as well as further study in Mechanics and Statistics. All the content from the AS Level in Mathematics can be used in the A Level Papers. There is also a greater emphasis on using reasoning, modelling techniques and problem solving at AS/A Level Mathematics. These are skills that employers and universities are looking for when choosing candidates.
