The Extended Certificate in Performing Arts Dance is intended as a basic introduction to the Performing Arts sector, alongside other fields of study and is the equivalent to one A Level. The course supports progression to a wide range of higher education courses depending on other qualifications taken. The course explores four mandatory units, which include: 1. Investigating Practitioners’ Work (90 GLH)- Externally assessed. Learners are required to research two practitioners and a theme set by the exam board. Learners will investigate and critically analyse the contextual influences on their selected practitioners and performance work with a focus on how these related to the identified theme. 2. Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance (90 GLH)- Internally assessed. Learners will develop an in-depth understanding of the role and skills of a performer and dancer, as well as developing performance skills and techniques for live performance. Learners will also apply performance skills and techniques in selected styles, as well as reviewing and reflecting on the development of skills and techniques for live performance. 3. Early Entry – Externally assessed. Unit 3 Group Performance Workshop. Learners will proactively explore a set task issued by the exam board. They will develop and present a group performance, based on a theme published within the set paper. This will be supported by formal log entries to evidence application of knowledge and developments in response to a specific stimulus. 4. (Yr13) Unit 22 – Movement in Performance Learners will explore two contrasting forms and genres of dance via practical workshops and rehearsals, presenting refined material in showcase performance. This will be supported by research and analytical tasks. Dance is a very vibrant and dynamic subject which requires energy and commitment. It is preferable for you to have gained at least a Merit in BTEC Level 2 Dance but consideration is given to those with relevant experience, commitment and enthusiasm for the subject. You will also be required to compose and perform an original solo dance as part of an audition process. Taught as a vertical group with Year 13
