A Level Psychology QAN code 601/4838/X Psychology the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. In a nutshell it is all about you! What could be more fascinating? In everyday life there can be many ways of thinking about the same situation or event. Psychologists adopt different approaches on what is important to understand and study about the human mind and behaviour. As a result of studying Psychology, the career opportunities are vast and varied. Typical fields include Clinical Psychology; Counselling; Educational Psychology; Forensic Psychology; Mental Health Work; Teaching; Health Psychology; Occupational Psychology; Sports Psychology; Policing; Sales and Marketing; Business and Management; Politics; Psychotherapy; Medicine; Healthcare; Dentistry and many more. We follow the AQA specification (7182) and the course content is spread over two years. YEAR 12 • Approaches in Psychology: the different ways in which Psychologists attempt to explain behaviour. • Research Methods: the experimental & non-experimental methods Psychologists use to investigate behaviour. • Social Influence: the effect of other people on our behaviour. • Memory: the way our mind stores information and why we forget things. • Psychopathology: what it means to be abnormal as well as explanations and treatments for mental disorders. • Attachment: how and why attachment to a caregiver is so important for our development and the effect it has on our behaviour. YEAR 13 • Aggression: the explanations for aggressive behaviour from a range of approaches and contexts. • Biopsychology: the effects of our biology on our behaviour • Schizophrenia: the symptoms, classification and diagnosis, explanations and treatments for this disorder. • Cognition and Development: the ways in which mental processes e.g., thinking, language, memory and perception change throughout the human lifespan. • Issues and Debates: the problems and considerations that affect all psychological study. • Research Methods: extension of knowledge of psychological investigations learned in Year 12.

Entry requirements

A minimum of five GCSE passes at grades 4 or 5 including English Language and Maths. Students must then meet subject specific typical minimum entry requirements (listed below).

How you'll be assessed

Psychology is assessed by three 2 hour written examinations in May and June at the end of the two-year course; students will be examined on all course content delivered in Year 12 and in Year 13.
