BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science QAN Code 60174365/RA14 Equivalent to 1 A Level For anyone who sees their future career in Science the Applied Science qualification is an excellent starting point. It covers a wide range of topics across biology, chemistry and physics and will allow you to acquire a high level of practical laboratory skills from which the theory is then drawn. The course provides the opportunity to gain knowledge understanding and skills for those who wish to work in health care or other science related industries. In order to be successful on this course you should enjoy and be good at working independently, meeting deadlines, solving problems, and extracting information from new sources. The qualification will have an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction or distinction* calculated on the total points achieved. There are four units to complete over a period of 2 years these include: • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Unit 3: Science Investigative Skills • Unit 8: Physiology of Body Systems
A minimum of five GCSE passes at grades 4 or 5 including English Language and Maths. Students must then meet subject specific typical minimum entry requirements (listed below).
There will be two externally assessed units: • Year 1 - Unit 1: Principles and Application of Science. This will include: x3 40 minute exams in Biology, Chemistry and Physics • Year 2 - Unit 3: Science Investigative Skills (Part A 3hrs and Part B 1.5hrs) There will also be two internally assessed units (Coursework). • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Unit 8: Physiology of Human Body Systems
