Course summary

Why study this course? Further Mathematics must be studied alongside Mathematics and will help you further develop a deeper understanding of some of the core mathematical processes that are essential in all mathematical and science-based degrees. It is a preferred course for most science and mathematics-based degrees and is highly sought after as not many students do it. Further Mathematics A Level is highly regarded by both higher education institutions and employers and is one of the top subjects for helping students achieve university places in the sciences. On top of this, several studies have shown that Further Mathematics A Level has the greatest impact on earning potential out of any A Level offers in the UK. What will you study? Core Pure Mathematics 1 & 2 – complex numbers; argand diagrams; series; roots of polynomials; volumes of revolution; matrices; linear transformations; proof by induction and vectors in year 12 and again in year 13 to a greater depth accompanied by: methods in calculus; polar coordinates; hyperbolic functions; and differential equations. Further Statistics 1 - discrete random variables; poisson distributions; chi-squared tests in year 12 and again in year 13 to a greater depth accompanied by: geometric & negative binomial distributions; central limit theorem; probability generating functions; quality of tests. Further Mechanics 1 - momentum and impulse; work, energy and power; elastic collisions in one dimension in year 12 and again in year 13 to a greater depth accompanied by: elastic strings and springs; elastic collisions in two dimensions. Future Pathways You could go on to university to study a mathematics-related degree or pursue a career in mathematics. In fact, to study mathematics or Computer Science at one of the top UK universities, Further Maths is usually a requirement. Engineering and most areas of physics, most science-based subjects, computing, accountancy, economics, business, banking, air traffic control, retail management, architecture, surveying, cartography, psychology and, of course, teaching, are just some of the possibilities.
