Course summary

Why study this course? Physics is an evolving subject, there is always more to discover. By studying Physics you may well be on your first step to a world changing discovery but you will certainly develop skills that can be transferred to just about any other area of work, from setting up a business to saving the planet. Learning to think like a Physicist will help you get to the root of problems, draw connections that aren’t obvious to others, explain your thinking and show you’re right via measurements and calculation. Physics won’t necessarily give you all the answers, but it will teach you how to ask the right questions. What will you study? You will study the concepts of particles and radiation, waves, mechanics, materials and electricity during Year 12. Year 13 develops further on mechanics, fields, thermal physics and nuclear physics. You will also study an the optional unit ‘turning points’ which explores the theories and experiments which changed Physics and its ideas such as Quantum Physics and The General theory of Relativity. There is an emphasis on developing key practical skills and you will carry out a number of required practicals throughout the two years. Upon successful completion, you will gain a practical skills accreditation which is awarded alongside your grade. Future Pathways A Physics qualification at A-Level provides the necessary skills to follow any science-related degree course or profession.
