The course is made up of 4 units, 3 mandatory and one optional (decided by SBE). Year 12 Unit 2 – Creating Systems to Manage Information This will involve you studying databases and their uses. With databases underpinning information held on the web, it is essential that we fully understand how they work. You will examine the structure of data, its origins and how an efficient data design follows through to an effective and useful database. You will be expected to develop and test an effective database system. This will be assessed by a 10 hour project to be carried out at a time set by the exam board. Unit 3 – Using Social Media in Business Many businesses now use Social Media to promote their business and keep customers up to date. You will explore different social media websites, their uses and the potential pitfalls for business purposes. You will develop a plan to use social media strategies for specific business purposes. You will then implement the plan, developing and posting content and interacting with others. Finally, you will collect data and review the effectiveness of your solution. Year 13 Unit 1 – Information Technology Systems This will explore the relationships between the hardware and software that form an IT system, the way systems work individually and together as well as the relationship between the user and the system. You will examine issues related to the use of IT systems and the impact that these have on organisations and individuals. Unit 5 – Data Modelling You will find out how using data modelling aids decision-making and helps to determine a preferred course of action. You will develop the skills necessary to create complex spreadsheets, producing accurate information that informs decision making. You will design, develop, test and evaluate a spreadsheet solution.
