Course summary

Are you interested in the way that we speak and communicate? Have you ever considered what messages our society and others send when they communicate with others? Do you enjoy manipulating language in order to achieve your desired effect? English Language will help you to develop all of these. English Language is a core subject and you will be able to combine it effectively with any other combination of subjects. You will develop important skills such as critical analysis and the ability to write formally which are highly valued by universities and, of course, by your future employer.

Paper 1: Language, the individual and society Study children’s language development and different methods of linguistic analysis Answer four questions that require you to analyse a variety of texts and spoken language data/transcripts 2 hours and 30 minutes exam - 40% of A Level qualification Coursework  Language investigation on a topic of your choice within the study of linguistics.  Piece of original writing based around story-telling, persuasion or informative writing with a supporting evaluation 20% of A Level qualification Paper 2: Language diversity and change  Evaluate a position in a linguistic debate on age, ethnicity, gender, occupation, region, etc.  Compare two non-fiction texts that present a similar viewpoint analysing the methods that they use to convince an audience 2 hour and 30 minutes exam - 40% of A Level qualification
