Our A Level Latin is a 2-year course, with no coursework. Students begin the course in Year 12 and take four final exams in Year 13 in the Summer term. Our exam board is OCR. Our A Level Latin course is made of four components: Unseen Translation, Prose Composition or Comprehension, Prose Literature, and Verse Literature. For students sitting the exam in 2023-24, Prose Literature will include excerpts from Cicero’s Pro Cluentio, Livy’s History of Rome (Book 1), and Tacitus’ Annals (Book 4), while Verse Literature will include excerpts from Virgil’s Aeneid, Catullus’ poems, and Ovid’s Heroides. For Unseen Translation, unseen prose will include excerpts from Livy, while unseen verse will include excerpts from Ovid. Prose Composition or Comprehension will include translation of or comprehension and grammar questions on an unseen prose text.
CONTENT OVERVIEW Learners build their knowledge of vocabulary and linguistic structures through reading and studying prose and verse texts in Latin. Learners study texts written by a range of prose authors and the verse unseen author to develop linguistic competence. ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW Unseen Translation (01) 100 marks - 1 hour 45 minute written paper 33% of total A Level Prose Composition or Comprehension (02) 50 marks - 1 Hour 15 minute written paper 17% of total A Level CONTENT OVERVIEW Learners study two Latin Prose Literature set texts in depth. Learners also study additional literature in translation in order to understand the context from which the set texts have been taken.
