Further Mathematics is highly recommended for students who have a flair for Mathematics and wish to pursue careers in Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. At Plume Academy we offer both the AS Further Mathematics and the A-level Further Mathematics qualifications. The Programme of Study and Assessment Students will be rewarded for demonstrating the ability to solve problems that require a combination of knowledge, skills and understanding from across the full course of study for the A-level Mathematics and AS Further Mathematics qualifications. Problem solving, proof and mathematical modelling will be assessed in Further Mathematics in the context of the wider knowledge which students will have studied. The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics consists of 4 externally examined papers. Students must complete all 4 assessments in the same examination series. The course is split equally into 2 components: Core Pure and Applied Options. The Core Pure is compulsory and consists of:- Proof Complex numbers Matrices Further Algebra and functions Further Calculus Further Vectors Polar coordinates Hyperbolic functions Differential equations For the Applied Options, students have to select two of the following three options:- A: Further Pure B: Further Decision C: Further Mechanics (The Applied Option will be decided at the start of the course) The Core Pure and Applied Options above are divided into topics to be done in the first year of the course for the AS Further Mathematics qualification and topics to be covered in Year 2 in the second year for the full A-level Further Mathematics qualification. Higher Education and Career opportunities There are a large number of careers in which Further Mathematics plays a significant part. These include: engineering, education, banking and finance, actuarial science, insurance, air traffic control, architecture and surveying, economics, medicine and sciences of all types.
