Course summary

This course gives a fascinating survey of all the main areas of Chemistry Organic - The chemistry of carbon compounds. Inorganic - The chemistry of metals and non-metals other than carbon. Physical – The study of heat changes and rates of reactions. The Programme of Study Linear - 2 year A level. OCR Chemistry A Content overview Module 1: Development of fundamental skills in Chemistry (integrated into the whole course Module 2: Foundations in Chemistry Module 3: Periodic table and energy Module 4: Core Organic chemistry Module 5: Physical chemistry and transition elements Module 6: Organic chemistry and analysis The course involves both theory and practical activities and makes use of Information and Communication Technology. Due to the high level maths content in this course, we highly recommend a grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics for this subject. Assessment Year 12—Students will be entered into AS examinations at the end of Year 12 as a benchmark of the progress they have made. There are two papers both examining content and practical skills in Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4. Year 13—Students will be examined on all six modules in three papers. Practical skills will also be reported separately as the practical endorsement in Chemistry. Higher Education and Career opportunities This course is suitable for any career involving Chemistry, including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Forensic sciences and laboratory work. Chemistry counts as a science qualification for a range of jobs and courses. Many Chemistry—based courses at University may also require A level Biology.
