Course summary

Mathematics at A level is both interesting and challenging. The A-level Mathematics qualification builds upon work completed at GCSE as well as introduces new fascinating concepts. A-level Mathematics is a valuable qualification for students wanting to pursue careers in a wide variety of areas and provides support for many courses both at A-level and university. The Programme of Study and Assessment The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Mathematics course consists of three externally examined papers. Students must complete all assessments in May/June of the same exam series. There are two Pure exam papers and one Applied paper split equally into Mechanics and Statistics. The Pure content consists of:- Topic 1 Proof Topic 2 Algebra and functions Topic 3 Coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane Topic 4 Sequences and series Topic 5 Trigonometry Topic 6 Exponentials and logarithms Topic 7 Differentiation Topic 8 Integration Topic 9 Numerical methods Topic 10 Vectors The Applied content consist of two sections: 1. Statistics Topic 1 Statistical sampling Topic 2 Data presentation and interpretation Topic 3 Probability Topic 4 Statistical distributions Topic 5 Statistical hypothesis testing 2. Mechanics Topic 6 Quantities and units in mechanics Topic 7 Kinematics Topic 8 Forces and Newton’s Law Topic 9 Moments Higher Education and Career opportunities Many careers benefit from following A-level Mathematics. These include: financial management, teaching, social sciences, logistics, graphics, building trade, film industry, armed forces, accountancy, actuarial science, banking and computing.
