Sociology helps you to position yourself within a global economy. and will give you a competitive edge in the job market. Sociology is a highly academic A-Level choice. More importantly, Sociology is both interesting and relevant to society today, providing you with a variety of transferable skills and helps position yourself within a global economy. Sociology also requires you to be open minded. Taking into account various different theoretical perspectives such as functionalism, the New Right, feminism, Marxism and Interactionism, Sociology also requires you to be open minded. The teaching of Sociology is innovative, with a range of methods being employed, from independent research activities, group work, class discussions, presentations and regular exam style questions to build on good exam technique and essay writing skills. Sociology prepares students effectively for further study at university and for entering a range of jobs. Issues raised: Why does gender affect achievement? Has society become post-modern? Is the family in decline? Which social groups commit crime? How good is a theory – is there any evidence? Which research method is best? Can there ever be a complete theory of society? Expectations of students: Sociology is 100% examination based and there is NO coursework. In order to prepare for their end of year examinations, students must be able to meet deadlines for essays and complete written assessments at the end of topics. You will receive written feedback that you will be expected to respond to. Students will be expected to read quality newspapers and watch TV programmes with current affairs content. Reading around the subject is crucial. Students will be expected to develop their discussion skills, their listening skills and their writing skills. You may be invited to revision workshops throughout the year to further develop key skills. Finally, concern for policy change is encouraged as “what is the point in studying society, if you can do nothing to change it?” Career paths: what job could I get? Journalism, law, police force, education, social work, civil service, criminal justice system, youth services, health services, business, politics, marketing and advertising. The list is endless.
