Course summary

Course description This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers, especially those in the creative industries. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning into practice by producing prototypes of their choice. Course content A Level Design and Technology - Product Design requires students to engage in both practical and theoretical study. This course requires students to develop their technical knowledge of materials and manufacturing then apply it to real life situations by using their design skills. The course has two main components: Technical principles and Designing and making principles. Students must also demonstrate maths and science skills to ensure their products are functional and feasible.

How you'll be assessed

Paper 1: Technical Principles Written exam: 2.5 hours -120 marks - 30% of A Level. Mixture of short answers and extended response. Paper 2: Design and Making principles Written exam: 1.5 hours - 80 marks - 20% of A Level. A mixture of short answers and questions based on a visual stimulus. Non-exam assessment (NEA) Practical application of technical principles and design and make principles - Substantial design and make a project - 100 marks - 50% of A Level.
