
WHY STUDY ENGLISH LITERATURE? Do you love reading books, exploring poetry and studying plays? This course is for students who enjoy stories and want to enrich their experience of them. The range of texts studied includes classics such as Shakespeare’s Othello and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights and modern masterpieces such as Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns and Poems of the Decade. You will develop your analytical and interpretative skills, as well as your appreciation of the breadth of English Literature. WHAT’S COVERED? As part of the course you will explore the genres of gothic horror and dystopian fiction through Frankenstein and A Handmaid’s Tale. Moreover, you will jump into the exciting world of post-war New Orleans in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, as well as William Shakespeare’s tempestuous Cyprus in Othello. You will also view the modern world through other perspectives in our modern poetry anthology, and also revisit Victorian Britain via a collection of Christina Rossetti’s poetry. FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES English A level is considered to be sound evidence of your writing and analytical skills and will be good currency for university entrance. It is identified by the Russell Group as a ‘facilitating subject’, meaning it is one of the most respected subjects by elite universities. Students with English A levels have gone on to study a wide range of degrees often arts or social science based. Career choices are equally wide ranging
