Course summary

WHY STUDY FILM? Alongside Literature, Film is a reader’s art. Over time, our students develop appreciation of the complex use of visual and aural codes to create immersive meanings and comment on contexts, which is richly rewarding. We are pleased to offer the full A level taught by established, expert (Masters level) and experienced enthusiasts in the subject area. The course is theoretical and critical, but also has hands on production elements, with screenwriting, storyboarding and filming as options. This course is designed for those who enjoy reading narrative and creating artistic device through this refined visual medium. It draws on themes, characters and styles. WHAT’S COVERED? Over the two years of the course, students study European and American mainstream and independent cinema, the emotional response and the critical and contextual reception of film. This subject is a response to narrative, themes, character, identity and production techniques (or “film Micro”). Students can enjoy and critique some of the greatest works of film ever made, from Vertigo to City of God. Since Film became available, the subject has often scored the highest outcomes of the Academy with many A grade responses and very rewarding journeys for the students. Film is only available to post-16 level 3 students in the Academy. Each year features 2 papers and an NEA (non-examined assessment). The exam papers are based around national and industry identities, and audience and producers. FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES Film students have gone on to study Production, Screenwriting, Film Arts, English and Film, Drama, Communication Studies and Creative Media. It develops studio and TV production aspects. There is reading of stories and texts in this subject.  It is suitable for work in the fields of journalism, film making and monitoring. As an A2, it counts for full UCAS points with Universities who look for candidates with at least two GCEs.

5 GCSE grades at 9-5 including English.
