WHY STUDY ART, CRAFT & DESIGN? The Art and Design course at Aylward Academy has been composed for students who wish to explore and refine their skills in a wider range of artistic techniques. You will learn both traditional and contemporary design techniques and processes and explore a wide variety of materials and media allowing you to interpret your project themes in a unique and personal way. Students who study Art with us at Aylward will be introduced to the vital techniques and attitudes required to pursue a professional career in the creative industry. During your time with us you will develop a portfolio of work which is essential for higher education interviews, and will be taught how challenge your thinking in order to produce independent, individual and exciting outcomes. WHAT’S COVERED? You can explore a wide range of artistic media; drawing, printmaking, sculpture, 3D design, textiles, surface pattern design, illustration and photography to produce a specialised portfolio. You will balance your creative skills with studying art & design history, gallery visits and research tasks. WHAT’S COVERED? FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES Progression from this course can lead on into Higher Education, in specialized areas such as; Fine Art, Printed Textiles, Photography, Graphic Design, Illustration, Computer and Traditional Animation, Fashion, Textiles, Multimedia Design, 3D Design and Website Design. Candidates will also have developed the fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding to enter employment within the creative field. Studying this course could lead to a variety of careers in the Art Industry, including: Artist, 3D Designer, Textile designer, Graphic designer, Teacher, Art therapist, Set designer or Shoe designer.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at 9-4 including English and Maths. Minimum grade 4 in Art GCSE.

How you'll be assessed

COMPONENT 1 – Personal Portfolio 60% of the overall qualification 90 marks (Split into 2 sections listed below) Component 1 incorporates three major elements: supporting studies, practical work, and a personal study. Practical Work & Supporting Studies : 72 marks (80% of component 1) Personal Study (Essay) : 18 marks (20% of component 1) COMPONENT 2 – Externally Set Assignment 40% of the qualification 72 marks (18 marks for each of the four Assessment Objectives) The externally set assignment is split into 2 sections Preparatory Studies and Timed Exam : 15-hour Sustained Focus Period (3 days)
