Course summary

WHY STUDY MUSIC? The Music courses at Aylward Academy will give students the opportunity to show of their talents to the full. We in the Music Department change the course and units we offer to meet the students individual strengths. We go out of our way to be involved in the music happening around London, visiting venues and performances and we ensure there is opportunity for our students to perform and showcase their own work. Students choosing music will develop their performance and composition skills. The Music Technology course enables learners to develop a core of knowledge around the music technology industry and the use of recording and technical equipment. It provides the breadth and practical application of music technology learning which will prepare learners for a number of job roles in the sector, either in its own right or when taken alongside an additional complementary qualification. Students who study music gain increase confidence and social skills, better listening skills and develop their own resilience to create work they can be proud of. WHAT’S COVERED? The BTEC in Music/Music Technology is designed to give learners the practical skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in the challenging and competitive world of music technology. Performance elements, and ongoing assessment with end of year performances replaces written exams, ensuring learners remain engaged throughout their course. An increasing number of talented musicians see the BTEC as a step on the way to achieving their goals and their dreams. FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sound Engineering is intended as a Tech Level qualification, equivalent in size to one A Level. It is designed to meet the Tech Bacc measure if studied alongside Level 3 mathematics and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This size of qualification allows learners to study related and complementary qualifications without duplication of content. It provides good preparation for learners considering an apprenticeship in sound engineering. It supports access to a range of higher education courses in sound engineering and the wider music industry when taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications. As well as direct entry to employment, this qualification will prepare learners for higher study of a specialist degree or BTEC Higher National Diploma. This route gives learners the opportunity to enter the sector at a higher level, or in a more specialist role.
