Course outline This qualification is suitable for learners intending to pursue any career in which an understanding of technology is needed. The content of this A Level in Computer Science is divided into three components. Two hand written exams; Computer Systems, Algorithms and Programming. And a programming project. Both examinations are hand written with no calculator allowed. The programming project is a practical portfolio based assessment with a task that is chosen by the teacher or learner and is produced in an appropriate programming language of the learner’s or teacher’s choice. Mathematical skills are embedded throughout the content of the three components. Students will cover the following content: • The characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices • Software and software development • Exchanging data • Data types, data structures and algorithms • Legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues • Elements of computational thinking • Problem solving and programming • Algorithms to solve problems and standard algorithms Lesson structure and expectations The lessons will develop skills in problem-solving using computers. They will be a mixture of practical programming, development and theoretical study. Mathematical skills used to express computational laws and processes will be developed. Students are expected to be highly independent in terms of developing their programming skills. Course requirements A grade 6 in computer science or mathematics. Next steps This qualification provides the perfect springboard for students looking at specialising in a computing-based career, university or L4 Higher Apprenticeships.
