
The Product Design course is focused on the analysis of consumer products and applications in respect of materials, components, and marketability in order to understand their selection and uses in industrial and commercial practices of product development. Product Design A level is designed to encourage students to: •• Identify product requirements. •• Understand implications of wider design issues. •• Consider materials. •• Understand manufacturing processes and techniques. •• Understand and follow health and safety requirements. •• Learn from existing products and practice. •• Develop design, thinking and communication skills. •• Increase technical understanding •• Evaluate the viability of design solutions. •• Advance making skills.
Grade 5 in a GCSE Design subject, if taken. Minimum Grade 5 in Mathematics. Prior study of one of the Design and Technology subjects is advantageous.
Paper 1: Technical Principles 30% exam. Paper 2: Designing and Making Principles 20% exam. NEA Practical application of technical principles, designing and making principles 50% non-exam assessment.
