
This course is a Level 3, one-year course (the qualification is equivalent to an AS Level in terms of UCAS points). In this course you can expect to build upon, and strengthen, existing skills, focusing on using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to everyday life, as well as manging projects. The course builds on GCSE maths, with a sharper focus on problem solving skills by considering and tackling mathematics in meaningful contexts. This includes financial applications of mathematics (understanding national insurance, tax and interest), as well as further statistical ideas (looking at trends) that can support work in other subjects such as Psychology, Biology, BTEC Science courses, Geography, Sociology, Business Studies, Economics and even History. This subject is only available as a 4th option in year 12 or year 13.
MINIMUM SUBJECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS (in addition to the general 6TH form minimum entry requirements of 5 x grade 4 at GCSE/equivalent or above including maths and English): GCSE Grade 4 in Maths.
Exam Board Information: AQA Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies - 1350 Paper 1 – Compulsory Content, Paper 2 – Compulsory & Optional Content (Currently Decision Mathematics) * The assessment includes the use of source material that students will work with as part of the course. Students will be expected to develop and demonstrate confidence and competence in the understanding and application of statistical techniques, solving problems related to personal finance and analysing numerical and graphical data. *Options – Statistics, Decision Mathematics, Graphical Techniques
