The course builds upon and develops the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing which have been acquired in GCSE work. An important difference is that the subject concentrates not on basic transactional language but on wider social, political, economic and cultural issues. The course will develop not only skills, but also understanding of the grammatical systems of the language studied; and give better insight into the way of life, history, geography, political system, economic life and customs of the countries where the language is spoken. Students may also have the opportunity to study the literature of the country and where possible to visit the theatre, cinema or watch video and on-line material. Furthermore, experience of a working environment using languages is underlined by the possibility of a programme of work experience in Europe for Year 12 students and/or a study tour in the summer.
Students must have achieved a grade 7 or above at GCSE to have a realistic chance of success in A Level French.
All exams are taken at the end of Year 13. Paper 1: Listening/Reading/Writing - Aspects of French-speaking society - Artistic culture in the French speaking world - Multiculturalism in French-speaking society - Aspect of political life in French-speaking society - Grammar Paper 2: Written paper assessment - One text and one film or - Two texts from the list set in the specification - Grammar Paper 3: Speaking test - Stimulus card material and general conversation - Individual research project - One of four sub-themes i.e aspects of French-speaking society or artistic culture in the French-speaking world.
