What is Psychology? It is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. We are all amateur psychologists, every time we try and work out why someone acted the way they did or try to predict how someone might behave or react. Essentially, Psychology is all about people. The study of Psychology tries to find answers to some of these questions by investigating them in a more scientific manner. WHAT WILL I STUDY Students will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of Psychology through a range of topics including: • Cognitive Psychology • Social Psychology • Learning Psychology • Biological Psychology • Aggression • Consumer Behaviour • Gender • Lifestyle choices • Stress and addiction WHERE WILL THIS TAKE ME Psychology can lead to careers in: • Industrial • Clinical • Educational • Forensic Psychology • Counselling and Therapy However, it is also a useful qualification to have if you are thinking of any career that involves dealing with people (almost everything!). An understanding of psychological procedures and principles would also be useful in careers such as: • Teaching • Health service related occupations • Law (including police) • Social work.
Four subjects at Grade 4 or above, including Grade 4 in Maths and Grade 5 in Science and English.
You will carry out your own piece of psychological research where you will investigate: • Research Methods • Data Collection and Research Design • Presentation of Findings • Implications The BTEC Level 3 in Psychology is assessed via a combination of external exams, mandatory units, optional units and portfolio.
