Course summary

The aim of Philosophy and Ethics is to develop an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to questions of truth and meaning. Philosophy and Ethics engages with the big questions that humans have puzzled over since the beginning of time: Does God exist? How do we know what is true? What is the source of our moral awareness? Through a rigorous academic approach to these concepts and questions, the course enables pupils to reflect on and develop their own values, opinions and beliefs about the world. Year 12 Outline - The study of ethical theories such as: natural law, Kantian ethics and utilitarianism. Applied ethics in euthanasia and business. - The study of ancient Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. A study of different theories about the soul, mind and body. Arguments for and against the existence of God and challenges to religious belief from the problem of evil. - The study of theology, including Augustine’s ideas on human nature, concepts of death and the afterlife, Christology and the ideas of Bonhoeffer. Year 13 Outline - The study of meta-ethics, the conscience and sexual ethics. - Religious language and philosophical ideas about the nature of God. - Whether God’s attributes are subject to the limits of logical possibility of divine self-limitation. Religious pluralism, gender, liberation theology and Marx A Level Religious Studies can assist entry to a diverse range of university courses, such as English Literature, History, Psychology and Law. Prospective medical and Bio-Science students find the study of ethics very useful and budding lawyers enjoy the chance to develop their skills in presenting arguments. The wide-ranging skills and knowledge the course provides allows students to move on to a host of further studies and career paths. Areas of work that some students have gone into in the past are law, teaching, journalism, policing and social work. Philosophy and Ethics leads to a wide variety of courses and careers. Philosophy is one of the most sought after degree subjects for careers in the financial sector.
